Puerto Maldonado is the capital and the starting point for trips to the rivers Tambopata, Piedras and under Madre de Dios. There are daily flights from Lima or Cusco. For the most adventurous traveler by land from Cusco.
DAY 1: CUSCO ANDES + CLOUD FOREST LODGE
Leaving Cusco early, we will pass through the preinca Tombs of Ninamarca, the colonial town of Paucartambo known as the region’s folklore center. The next stop is Acjanacu (3,530m/11,870ft) which is the entrance to the Manu Biosphere, for an overview of the amazon Basin. After that, we’ll descend through different ecological floors such as the puna, the elfin forest, down into the lush Cloud Forest, along the way we may see endemic flora and fauna such as, butterflies, giant tree ferns and orchids, monkeys, birds like, toucans, tanagers, etc. The Cloud Forest is home of Peru’s National bird which is “the Cock of the Rock” (Rupicola peruviana, we visit its lek) and the spectacled bear (tremarctus ornatus) -the only bear found in South America. We overnight at our comfortable and typical Lodge.
DAY 2: CLOUD FOREST LODGE + RAINFOREST ATALAYA PORT + LODGE
We have a pre-breakfast walk to look for endemic birds of the cloud forest like quetzals, cotingas, toucans, woodpeckers, tanagers, manakins, hawks, oropendolas as well as the woolly monkey, brown capuchin, insects and more. After a hearty breakfast, we have 3 hours ride to Atalaya (500m rainforest) where we will board our canoe that will take us for 40 Min. to our Lodge, situated on the banks of the mighty Alto Madre de Dios River. Here we will spend the day exploring the surrounding area and the very interesting trails that will show us this amazing ecosystem. In a little oxbow lake and a mysterious swamp where we will have the opportunity to see the prehistoric Hoatzin, caimans, capibaras, monkeys, and different species of birds. After dinner, we will hear sounds of the amazonian night like the Night Monkey, the Kalinowski Rat, frogs, Great Potoos and the Pigmy Owl, among many others inhabitants of the night in a night walk.
DAY 3: LODGE + HOT SPRINGS + MATSHIGUENKA COMMUNITY
On this day, very early we will spend 15 minutes traveling down the river by boat to observe a parrot clay lick (collpa), this is a rich deposit of natural minerals and clay in the wall of the river here we can observe different species of Parrots, parakeets and Macaws giving a colour show and impressive uproar. After breakfast and this unforgettable show we will continue downstream toward the native community of Shipetiari (Matshiguenka tribe). In the itinerary we may see a variety of birds as well as some mammals along the riversides and we will also enjoy the natural hot Springs. The afternoon will be dedicated to exploring the community and sharing in their activities. At night we will have the opportunity for a night walk where with luck we will see night birds and also to hear spectacular sounds. We spend the night in tents next to the river.
DAY 4: MATSHIGUENKA COMMUNITY + PILCOPATA TOWN + LODGE
On our fourth day, after a walk, our boat will take us to Atalaya port where the bus will be waiting for us. We will travel to our welcoming lodge in Pilcopata where we will spend our last night.
DAY 5: PILCOPATA + CUSCO
After breakfast our bus will take us back to Cusco, arriving in the afternoon.
